Necessity Is The Mother That Gives Birth To New Skills By Mary Ann Cadorna
One of my many radio talk show quotes was ” Necessity is the mother that gives birth to new skills.” For me, it’s more than a title, slogan, or tagline; it’s an entrepreneurial and personal development spirit to overcome obstacles and difficulties, a willingness to learn, rise above man-made barriers, and succeed.
Autodidact’s Foundation: Very early on, I discovered this life would be met with many challenges alone, without the foundational support most children are comforted with and protected to receive. Being silently cognizant of that truth, I knew it would truly be up to me and my desire to rise above. It’s an innate trait; I always reach for something greater, and striving for something higher would be the impetus to the impossible. I didn’t feel bad for myself; I was too young to understand that truth. And so from that time on I was in auto and didact mode to survive and thrive!
Building Pad to Entrepreneurship: Bringing that building pad fast forward, when I first became an entrepreneur in 2002, would be the defining moment in refining my autodidactic skills. Starting as an agent twenty-three years ago wasn’t easy in the real estate business. I felt like I was receiving a mission from the TV series Mission Impossible, and if I didn’t accept, the unknown opportunity would disintegrate along with the cassette tape. I was in a city of choice I didn’t know, with people who were total strangers in an even more daunting industry. However, it was a city anchored by an excellent hospital whose treatment saved me from a breast cancer scare, and I sincerely wanted to make a difference for my personal experience.
Adversarial Impetus: So there I was, under overtly hostile and adversarial conditions, with training and opportunity withheld, I found myself at that mission-impossible crossroads. I persevered enough to stay three months and fight the wall of politics long enough to make an opportunity for myself and close two escrows self-taught. As a mama bear with two cubs, I wanted a better life and knew the unlimited potential of real estate commissions would be a life changer. And there I was, with support eluding me, not knowing the ins and ouches of how to show properties, let alone in a town I was unfamiliar with. Or how to use a lock box key, write an offer, order disclosures, and open and close an escrow.
Fail or Prevail: My first two clients would be my test and testimonial. Oh my gosh, it was a necessity for me to learn, and the labor pains of pushing out and giving birth to all those skills simultaneously made me cry, feeling like I was being set up to fail. Their lack of desire to help me with the very basics was telling! Thinking of my cubs, Mama Bear wouldn’t let that happen. I wasn’t going to fail; I was determined to prevail!
From Face It to Grace It: Ironically, facing failure wasn’t a fate I was willing to accept, and so by the grace of God, help, and kindness were extended by the first broker I ever worked with, with whom I was in contract for my very first transaction. He made an appointment to meet me at my office. I still remember sitting with him in the glass office, surrounded by all the curious competitors. Steve Beckett made sure, page by page, that I had all the documents I needed to close escrow, and my file was perfect. Whew! He has since passed away, but in the harsh desert and high dunes of the real estate, he was an oasis that allowed me the life-saving water to go on. The desert wasn’t so scary anymore; there was one human being who really cared, and for his help, I will always be grateful.
Giving Birth to New Skills: Entering the labor room of a whole new business alone is not for the faint of heart or weak of spirit. From that conception, giving birth to new skills is very painful, especially if one cares for the baby to be drug-free and delivered naturally without painkillers, or an epidural, not unlike the labor pains of the skills you need to push out and give birth to, to live a better life. Delivering a baby is life-threatening, and giving birth to my real estate skills was economically life-threatening. If I hadn’t endured pushing through the labor pain to deliver those life-changing skills, I would not have been able to provide and push out all the beautiful homes and a better life for me and my clients.
Mission Impossible: The mission impossible became the mission possible. I just had to accept the unknown assignment and be willing to endure the labor pains of pushing out those skilled babies. In that successful delivery, those skills grew along with my more complex experiences and became more defined and refined over the decades.
Labor Pains of Life: Life is full of labor pains. It might as well be the labor pains that give birth to new skills that you can fall back on and rely upon for all your undertakings in life. So remember, “necessity is the mother that gives birth to new skills!” The question becomes, are you willing to go through the labor pains to deliver them for yourself and to the world? If you are eager to learn to earn, then you bring life to your struggles in the form of wisdom, stride, and true your skills bless others, too!
